Au Natural: Mineral Make-Up

Wellness on Wednesday is all about the natural you!

Looking for an all-natural make-up to get that all-natural look? Mineral make-up might be just what you’re seeking, but be aware that not all are created equal.

Born in the 1970’s the concept of mineral make-up is only recently booming in the beauty market. The original idea was to create beauty products made of all-natural, finely ground minerals from the earth, free from chemicals, dyes, binders, fragrances, preservatives, and synthetics (including parabens) found in traditional cosmetics. Although many companies of integrity produce pure, quality products that are far safer and better for the health of your skin, some fall under the radar with false or just plain tricky claims.

When searching for that perfect powder, here are some notes to keep in mind:

  • Getting enough SPF coverage? Due to the high content of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (ingredients commonly found in sunscreen), mineral make-up does provide some protection from the sun. However, experts agree that it may not help enough. Always use a regular sunscreen as part of your daily regimen.
  • “All mineral” does not equal “all safe.” Be on the lookout for bismuth oxychloride, a known skin irritant that is often added to products as a binder. Although it is a mineral, it is a byproduct of lead and copper processing, not a naturally occurring mineral of the earth.
  • Help for sensitive skin. Both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, common main ingredient, have anti-inflammatory properties and can actually have a calming effect on the skin. This is especially helpful for those with sensitive skin and inflammatory problems such as rosacea and acne.
